Sad Songs About Magic

March 11, 2018

About a year ago I had a thought-  "How would a relationship between a magician and his assistant go? What would a fight be like?" (I've always loved media with stage magician themes - like The Prestige, The Illusionist, or any Houdini documentaries- so this thought wasn't entirely out of the ordinary for me.)

I wrote down the line- "Honestly babe, I make you disappear every night. What does that say about us?"

A week later I had a story in my head. And a few months later I had some songs to tell that story.

Below you'll find 1.5 songs, the first in a series.

Curtains followed by Invisible Ink.

Curtains

Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you all to the show, our show.

A night of wonders, sure to amaze and inspire, inspired.

Music plays and lights come to life. Objects float in the air, doves explode into flame.

And you disappear in a flash, curtains cover the stage and I go take a bow.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed the show, our show.

We worked really hard on it, its all we’ve ever known. Well, all I have known.

I scream these words to the crowd, six dead-eyed drunks and a homeless man!

The absent applause is so loud, will blank stares and apathy never end?

One more night of rejection

in spite of perfection.

I walk backstage where I can’t be seen.

I find you under the trapdoor.

I hear your bitter laughter.

I hold you close as you start to weep.

Invisible Ink

Oh baby, don’t cry,

I can’t stand to see you so distressed. Does it help to know I’m here, trying my best?

Or is that the reason?

The reason that we’re in this mess? I can’t help you if i’m the problem, and i think i am.

Prechorus:

I want to ask you what’s wrong, but I know that I’m wrong and I can’t bear to hear that from you.

Babe what are we gonna do?

Chorus:

I regret the day that you took my name and said you’d follow me for the rest of our lives.

Right away, I tested your faith

Thank god, that your love was blind

when I said, "Let's move to Vegas and I'll make us famous.

If our luck runs out then my magic will save us."

How could I have been such a fool?

You don’t deserve me and I don’t deserve you.

Verse 2:

Oh baby, I’m tired.

Tired of saying that we’ll be ok. Will you hate me if I speak freely? I’m scared to death

If I really love you

Then maybe it’s better if I call it now. Baby, let go of me I’m sinking. Go save yourself

Prechorus 2:

I need to ask you what’s wrong, but I know that I’m wrong. You’d never say it, but I know that it’s true!

What are we gonna do?

Bridge:

I left you a note

It said thanks for the memories, but I think you’re too good for me.

I wrote it in magic ink, it’ll take you some time to read.

I’m gonna go out in the street.

I pray I find something inside me worth keeping. But right now-

Last Chorus:

I regret the day that you took my name and said you’d follow me for the rest of our lives.

Right away, I tested your faith

Thank god, that your love was blind

when I said, "Let's move to Vegas and I'll make us famous.

It seems our lucks run out. I don’t know how to save us

You’ve been so patient, and I’ve been so cruel.

You don’t deserve me and I don’t deserve you.
